Covid Pivot Story


The pandemic has meant less work security and a real knock to the confidence for many people.  For my friend of 35 years (and loyal Zjoosh customer) Kristy Frawley, its been more a case of “when the going get’s tough, the tough get going”. We love a “Covid Pivot” story at Zjoosh,  especially when we know the people involved so well and have watched their journey from it’s earliest beginnings.  

Kristy and partner Michael Rantissi are the owners of Kepos Street Kitchen in Redfern as well as Kepos & Co, a short walk away in Danks Street, Waterloo. Have you been? They are both incredible and will be first on my list of places to visit once restrictions are lifted.

Michael was born in Israel and is a classically trained chef, while Kristy has worked for airlines as well as hotels and restaurants in Sydney and London.  The talented pair met whilst working together at The Bathers’ Pavilion on Balmoral Beach over 16 years ago. The menu at Kepos Street Kitchen is Mediterranean based with a Middle Eastern twist and is truly delicious. Open for almost 9 years, it is now a much loved institution in the area. 

When Sydney was locked down in 2020 and they were unable to serve meals in their restaurants, they received calls from customers asking if they could please purchase their favourite Kepos dips and salads. Cue the Covid Pivot!!!  A display fridge was purchased and promptly filled with Kepos fan favourites for sale.  Fast forward to lockdown in 2021 and there are now over 65 items to sell in the Kepos deli including Kepos hummus, eggplant dip, cauliflower salad (my favourite), falafels, and the new dessert tub range which changes weekly.  Kepos Street Kitchen also has meal packs, mezze boxes, dishes to bake at home, and cocktails, all available to order online Wednesday to Saturday.  I have loved purchasing their marinated lamb and salads and being able to serve meals during lockdown, the likes of which I would never have been able to prepare myself.

Delivery is now available for the Inner West on Wednesdays, North Shore on Thursdays and Eastern Suburbs Friday and Saturdays.  Available to order now through the Kepos Street Kitchen website With Picnic season in full flight they are busily serving up picnics to go for friends and families to enjoy now that they can finally be together.
