Step by Step

Washing Your Cotton Homewares

1
Wash before first use

Always wash new cotton homewares before using them. This removes any finishing agents from manufacturing and pre-shrinks the fabric so it holds its shape and size going forward.

2
Sort by colour and use

Wash dish cloths and kitchen linens separately from bathroom towels and general laundry. Keep whites separate from colours to prevent dye transfer, especially when washing new items for the first time.

3
Wash at the right temperature

Kitchen cloths and dish towels can be washed at up to 60°C to remove bacteria and grease effectively. Decorative table linens and more delicate cotton pieces do better at 30–40°C to preserve colour and structure.

4
Dry promptly

Remove from the machine as soon as the cycle ends and shake out before hanging or tumble drying. Leaving damp cotton sitting in a pile encourages mildew and musty odours.

5
Iron while slightly damp

For a crisp finish on tea towels and table linens, iron on a medium-to-high heat while the fabric is still slightly damp. This makes the job easier and gives a much cleaner result.

Quick Guide

Do’s & Don’ts

Washing Wash kitchen cloths at 60°C regularly to keep them hygienic and fresh.
Drying Line dry in the sun when possible — sunlight is a natural antibacterial and brightener for white cotton.
Ironing Iron table linens while slightly damp on a medium-high heat for a clean, pressed finish.
Storage Store clean, dry cotton homewares in a cool, dry drawer or cupboard. Fold neatly to avoid deep creases.
Bleach on colours Never use chlorine bleach on coloured cotton — it strips dye and weakens the fabric. Use oxygen bleach for whites only if needed.
Leaving damp Don’t leave damp cloths bunched up — this is how mildew develops. Hang or dry promptly after use.
High heat drying Avoid tumble drying on high heat repeatedly — it shrinks cotton and breaks down fibres faster over time.
Fabric softener Skip fabric softener on dish cloths and tea towels — it coats the fibres and reduces absorbency.

A Note on Longevity

Cotton homewares only get better with use. The more you wash a good quality dish cloth or tea towel, the softer and more absorbent it becomes. Buy well, care for it properly, and it will serve you for years.
